T O P I C R E V I E WRobert PearlmanRecent discussions about crew completions had me thinking about a particular type of multi-signed piece, one that I haven't seen before.Has anyone put together pieces themed to a particular astronaut and signed by all his/her crewmates? For example, if the theme was John Young, then in addition to his autograph you would have: Gus Grissom (Gemini 3)Mike Collins (Gemini 10)Tom Stafford (Apollo 10)Gene Cernan (Apollo 10)Charlie Duke (Apollo 16)Ken Mattingly (Apollo 16)Bob Crippen (STS-1)Brewster Shaw (STS-9)Owen Garriott (STS-9)Bob Parker (STS-9)Ulf Merbold (STS-9)Byron Lichtenberg (STS-9)...all on one piece. What intrigued me about this idea -- and it may be unique to Young -- is the cross section of space history represented by all the astronauts included. That said, other collections themed to record-number fliers such as Franklin Chang-Diaz and Jerry Ross could offer other interesting crossovers. So has anyone done or thought of doing this? If so, what type of signing medium did you or would you use? I should add this is not something I am personally looking to do, it was just an idea that crossed my mind. And if you like the idea and want to run with it, be my guest...Greggy_DUnless one started when the crews were flying, something of that scope would be virtually impossible to complete present day.MrSpace86Interesting idea Robert. I agree with Greggy_D though, especially with astronauts like Jerry Ross, Franklin Chang-Diaz, Sergei Krikalev, etc, that is almost impossible. It would be fascinating to see such a piece though.328KFI'll get my project going with Scott Carpenter Mike DixonTo complete a "Jerry Ross collection" requires his signature and those of 32 crewmates ... big ask FFrenchRaises an interesting question - which spacefarer has shared a spacecraft with the most people throughout their career? Counting all the missions they flew, and (if applicable) people who were on a space station they docked with.Hart SastrowardoyoIt's funny you bring this up, because I was wondering what's the least number of crew signed photos one would need to have autographs of all those who flew on the space shuttle? For example, you would need STS-83 but not -94. And if you have STS-9 you wouldn't need STS-1 for Young.I'm assuming it would be equal to the number of people who flew only once - am I right?328KFFrancis, that would take some research, and the answer might be surprising. An obvious place to start would be the high-time shuttle guys (Ross and Chang-Diaz) with 7 flights each, but Hoot Gibson, with 5 flights had a large group together aboard Mir on STS-71.One would also need to make sure there were no "repeat" crew pairings among the crewmember's flights.I also think that Sergei Krikalev would be a candidate, having been aboard Mir for a year at one stretch with several visitors during that time, and several other long-term station missions. Here's a thought... Tim G. could work up some new commemorative patches for a given astronaut with some nice artwork symbolizing their various missions. I know these were done in the past in autographed versions, but without limiting a series to those who would sign, there is potential for some nice designs.
